In the pre-independence days of India, the British rulers ruined the indigenous industries. Muslin and silk industries were not exception to this.

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Nation, launched his famous Non-co-operation- Movement in 1921 as a part of the Freedom Movement of the country. He stressed the importance of the production of indigenous goods and the boycott of foreign goods as well and launched his 18 points constructive programmers’ that included the “ Khadi & Gramodyog Industry “ as a major one.

The Saha brothers of Chak Islampur( Dt. Murshidabad, West Bengal), i.e. Chandrakanta and Lalitmohan Saha had business in Silk from long past. They made a contact with respected Gandhiji through many renowned personalities of the country to draw his attention to the importance of silk industry in the economy of country and insisted him to include it into his ‘Khadi’ program me. But , at first Gundhiji was not agreed to include it into Khadi since it was not free from violence. On through investigation and being satisfied that it is free from violence and a good number of rural spinners and weavers were engaged into it he accepted it as a Khadi Industry in 1925.

Sri Lalitmohan Saha founded this samity on 19.07.1954 last under the Society Registration Act, 1961 of the Govt. of West Bengal, bearing the Registration no. 21751/191. It obtained the Khadi Certificate no. BGL/225 on 8th May,1955 from the Akhil Bharat Khadi & V.I. Board. Afterwards, in the year 1966 when the Khadi and Village Industries Commission was founded in accordance to the Special Act of the Govt. of India, this Samity was included under the fold of the KVIC. Since then the Samity has been running its multifarious activities both Khadi and Village Industries.

Late Lalitmohan Saha was the founder Secretary and Late Kalicharan Sharma a lifelong devotee in revival of Muslin, was the founder President of the samity. After the demise of Lalitmohan Saha in 1964 Sri Nanda Kumar Chowdhury shouldered the responsibility as Secretary to run the flagship of the Khadi program me of the samity to its great esteem.

Due to his tireless efforts the samity was able to gain the glorious position as the best functioning khadi institution in India, in 1999. On 26th March, 2006 he relinquished his responsibility as the Secretary as the Secretary and Sri Pranab Kumar Chowdhury a general Member of the samity was elected as the Secretary of the samity who continued his responsibility till 17th December, 2010.
