The Khadi and Village Industries movement was launched nearly 90 years ago under the inspiration and guidance of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Nation. When the All India Spinners Association was founded by Gandhiji, he entrusted the responsibility of the post of its founder Secretary to pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Right from the start, the All India Spinners Association was considered to be a body devoted to the service of the Spinners, weavers and other artisans associated with the program me.
KHADI the product of hand Spinning and weaving which was almost dead by the second decade of the present century on account of the planned effort of the alien rulers to dump British Textiles on India with a view when economic exploitation was revived by Mahatma Gandhi as a part of his unique non-violent movement against the foreign rule.
BAPU had the foresight to locate a main source of economic exploitation of this country and along with advising the people to boycott foreign cloth in the wake of the non-cooperation movement of 1921. as a part of his constructive programme espoused the nation to revive khadi indigenous spinning and weaving.
To quote the inimitable language of Jawaharlalji, Khadi become not only the ‘Livery of India’s freedom’, Khadi production centers called Ashram in many cases – became the centers of freedom movement.
KHADI, the vehicle to uplift the poor was chosen by Bapu as there was no room for exploitation of the poor in Khadi because a pool proof arrangement existed in the economics of Khadi and its implementation through cost chart which was not visible in other industries.
ACCORDING to Gandhiji Khadi was to be a fabric symbolizing equality on the social plane. And, on the economic plane, it was to be a product of self-labour and self consumption in a scheme of self-reliant village communities.
KHADI was as integral part of our freedom struggle movement, so it was revolutionary. Men like Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Rajaji and Dr. G. Ramchandran carried khadi on their shoulders from house to house during the freedom struggle because it was a symbol of freedom. Gandhiji wanted Khadi a new social order based on truth and non-violence.
